Live canvas
Live canvas
In Live Canvas, Alessandro Risuleo explores the human body as a living canvas—a vibrant surface of stories, identities, and transformation. At the heart of the project, tattoo art is not mere decoration, but a layered language, an embodied narrative. The photographed bodies—fully tattooed and interwoven—become pulsating abstractions, dissolving into one another, blurring all boundaries between subject and surface.
Risuleo does not document tattoos—he transfigures them. Bodies merge into a single organic composition, where lines of ink blend with shadows, muscles, and empty spaces. Individual identity evaporates, giving way to unfamiliar, ever-shifting forms that echo the abstract compositions of Franz Kline or the gestural fields of action painting—only here, rendered in living flesh.
In this radical fusion of gesture and skin, the body becomes moving pigment, “calligraphic flesh” that challenges traditional photography and enters a hybrid territory of performance, painting, and sculpture. Each image is a fragment of a collective, mutating organism.
Live Canvas is a reflection on identity and its dissolution, on the permanence of ink and the ephemerality of gesture, on the desire to leave a mark while simultaneously disappearing into something greater. The body is never object—it is medium. It is language. It is living canvas.
