ATALANTA and the golden fleece
ATALANTA and the golden fleece
In Atalanta and the Golden Fleece, Alessandro Risuleo rewrites and reclaims ancient mythology, transforming it into living, contemporary matter. Atalanta—swift, untouchable, undefeated—emerges as a symbol of conscious femininity, never to be sacrificed, eternally suspended between instinct and fate.
Here, the mythological narrative fuses with the legend of the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece, creating a visual and symbolic short circuit. Gold becomes more than prize or temptation—it is skin, snare, memory. As in the work of Louise Bourgeois, the body becomes an emotional and symbolic archive, woven with invisible threads linking myth to trauma, beauty to danger.
Risuleo sculpts his images like photographic bas-reliefs: bodies immersed in layers of fabric, golden fragments, and suspended gestures that evoke pursuit, struggle, or surrender. Atalanta is no longer a solitary hunter but an archetypal heroine—trapped and sovereign at once—in an endless race toward a fleece that may not exist.
Her run, like the modern psyche’s, is a pursuit of meaning through a visual landscape that blends power and fragility, desire and renunciation. Each frame becomes a fragment of narrative, a visual poem speaking of mythic time made flesh.
Atalanta and the Golden Fleece is not a depiction of legend, but its transfiguration. It is an invitation to reflect on how far we are still willing to run for what glitters—and whether the prize ever truly justifies the chase.
