Traces

Traces

In TRACES, Alessandro Risuleo brings photography back to its essential dimension: body, space, gesture. In an era where images are increasingly mediated by technology, the artist chooses to return to matter, to light, to real time. What unfolds is both a poetic investigation and a statement of intent.

Set within ADA, the interactive installation by Karina Smigla-Bobinski (Balloon Museum – EUPHORIA, Rome), TRACES features a dancer whose body is marked by black traces — graphic signs that echo the marks left by visitors on the artwork itself. These traces become symbols of inner passage, ephemeral yet enduring memory.

Visually, the composition is anchored by a central black line — a recurring motif in the series — that recalls the principles of Renaissance perspective, yet subverts them. It doesn’t merely guide the eye: it concentrates it, forces it to pause. It is both boundary and threshold. The human figure, always centrally placed, hovers between reality and abstraction, evoking the physical tension of Pina Bausch’s choreography and the conceptual poetics of Marcel Duchamp, where even the simplest gesture can become metaphor.

With TRACES, Risuleo questions the nature of memory, presence, and transformation. Each frame becomes a residue of action, a memory frozen in time, yet always pointing beyond itself. It is a tribute to the invisible imprint — the one the body leaves on space, and the one space inevitably leaves on the body.

At a time when the artist is deeply immersed in generative AI and digital image-making, TRACES reaffirms the value of analog experience as root and foundation. It is not nostalgia, but awareness: only those who have worked through matter can manipulate the immaterial with authenticity.
